Preview – BPT Elite16 Hamburg

After a stellar run of international success, Germany’s beach volleyball teams are set to make a triumphant homecoming this week. The Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Hamburg Elite16 event, taking place at the Am Rothenbaum Stadium from Wednesday to Sunday, will see nine German duos compete in front of their home fans. This marks the first major international tournament since the Paris 2024 Olympics and the European Championship, where German teams shone brightly.

Star-Studded Lineup for Germany

Leading the charge are Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler, who recently claimed silver medals at both the Paris Olympics and the European Championship. On the women’s side, Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann are riding high after securing the European title in the Netherlands last Saturday.

Adding to the excitement is the legendary Laura Ludwig, a Rio 2016 Olympic champion who is set to retire after this season. The 38-year-old, who lives in Hamburg, will compete in her 176th and final international tournament, marking the end of a remarkable career that began in 2005 and included a record five Olympic appearances. Ludwig, partnering with Louisa Lippmann, will start directly in the main draw. She is no stranger to success in Hamburg, having won back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017 alongside former partner Kira Walkenhorst.

Men’s Teams Aim for Glory

Ehlers and Wickler enter the tournament as the top-seeded men’s team, fresh off a season where they reached the semifinals in seven of nine events. The duo previously won bronze at the Hamburg Elite16 in 2022, and Wickler also took silver at the 2019 FIVB World Championship in the city.

Germany’s men’s contingent also includes Lukas Pfretzschner and Sven Winter, as well as Paul Henning and Maximilian Just, who will begin in the main draw. Meanwhile, Robin Sowa/Benedikt Sagstetter and Philipp Huster/Jonas Sagstetter will battle through Wednesday’s qualifier for a chance to join the main event.

International Competition Heats Up

The Hamburg Elite16 will feature a strong international field, including several teams from the Paris Olympics. Among them are Norwegian bronze medalists Anders Mol and Christian Sørum, who triumphed in Hamburg in 2018, and Polish duo Michal Bryl and Bartosz Łosiak, who won gold at last year’s Beach Pro Tour event. Italians Paolo Nicolai and Samuele Cottafava, who claimed silver in 2023, will also be in contention.

Women’s Tournament Led by Müller and Tillmann

The women’s competition will be headlined by Müller and Tillmann, who are seeded first after their recent European Championship victory. The duo finished ninth in Paris but are in excellent form, having won two of their last three tournaments. They will aim to reclaim the top spot on the podium for Germany, a feat not achieved since Ludwig and Walkenhorst’s 2017 victory.

Ludwig and Lippmann will also feature in the main draw, while Margareta Kozuch/Sarah Schneider and Anna-Lena Grüne/Chenoa Christ will begin in the qualifier.

Strong International Contenders

The German teams will face stiff competition from several international powerhouses. Swiss pair Tanja Hüberli and Nina Brunner, who won bronze in Paris, and Italians Marta Menegatti and Valentina Gottardi, who faced Müller and Tillmann in the European Championship final, are among the top contenders.

Tournament Schedule

The event kicks off on Wednesday with qualifiers for both men and women, with only the top four teams advancing. Pool play will take place on Thursday and Friday, followed by the Round of 12 and quarterfinals on Saturday. The tournament concludes on Sunday with the semifinals and medal matches.

As the German teams return to their home turf, fans can expect an electrifying week of beach volleyball action, with the nation’s stars aiming to shine once again on the international stage.
